Phases of the Program

Phase I of the program include:

  • Establishing/improving organization skills
  • Equipping students with compensatory strategies for improved attention, listening, and memory
  • Teaching students to be self advocates and use resources
  • Improving phonological awareness and phonics skills
  • Improving language skills—building vocabulary and understanding of concepts
  • Reading, writing, and word attack skill enhancement

In Phase II we pick up right where we left off in Phase I and continue to move through our "back to basics" hierarchy. Additional goals include, strategies improving decoding and spelling skills.

How do I know if my child is a candidate for the Language to Literacy Program?

Our program serves students 6 – 16 years of age.

If you answered yes to any of the questions in the “Does your child…” section or if your child’s teacher is reporting difficulties in the classroom, have your child evaluated.

At Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center we can complete a comprehensive assessment to determine the nature and extent of the problem and whether your child is a candidate for the program.

If your child has recently had a speech-language evaluation, the coordinator of the program can discuss with you whether or not another evaluation is needed.

If your child was recommended as a candidate for the program by a speech-language pathologist or special education teacher, the coordinator of the program can discuss with you what type of evaluation is needed.

To schedule an evaluation, please call 885-8318, ext. 500. Please tell the scheduler that you are interested in an evaluation for the Language to Literacy Program.

If you are unsure whether your child needs an evaluation or have further questions about the program, please call Lynn Scheuer, at 885-8318, ext. 289 or e-mail LScheuer@AskBHSC.org
