BHSC Philosophy

Poor reading abilities are based in language problems. Children with impaired auditory processing and organizational skills, phonological awareness skills, and/or limited expressive and receptive language and vocabulary skills are at risk!

Literacy includes the ability to pronounce words fluently and understand what was read. Many other skills must be in place before a student can do this successfully; including
• Auditory processing—what you do with what you hear
• Phonological Awareness and Phonics—hearing, identifying, manipulating and spelling the sounds of spoken language
• Receptive and Expressive Language—understanding and using vocabulary, grammar, and concepts

Children begin establishing these building blocks for successful literacy in infancy. Somewhere along the way your child may have missed some of those critical skills or required more explicit teaching of those skills.
Our literacy program is exceptional because we take a “Back to Basics” approach, explicitly teaching basic skills in a hierarchical way using our own pre-written, evidenced-based curriculum. We emphasize parent education and participation via in-services, weekly meetings, and daily homework.
