Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center is proud to announce a unique program for children age’s three to five years who are exhibiting characteristics of Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, NOS. The program embraces the philosophy of Dr. Stanley Greenspan who is a renowned leader in Autism education. The classrooms opened in September and we are amazed with the results we are seeing in the children this early on,’ commented Joseph J. Cozzo, President/CEO of Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center. “With the increasing diagnosis of Autism, 1 in 150 children in America have an autism spectrum disorder, we saw the need to work with these children and their families,’ he added. The preschool program implements the Greenspan approach for teaching children skills in all developmental areas with a focus on peer and adult social interactions. The goal is for children to attain age appropriate communication, social/emotional, behavioral, educational, fine and gross motor skills. Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center staff provide Intensive therapy sessions to achieve each child’s Individualized Educational Plan’s goals and objectives. A multidisciplinary team approach provides the opportunity to address the needs of each child. The Children are engaged in activities that are highly motivating, socially interactive and hands-on for them. The daily schedule is a combination of individual, small and large group activities that facilitate learning. The classroom team consists of staff that have been trained and/or educated in the Floortime teaching approach; including a Speech-Language Pathologist, Special Education Teacher, Occupational Therapist, Teacher Aides, Social Worker, and Music Therapist. Other services could include physical therapy if required on a child’s IEP. The Greenspan approach does not focus on the child only. Parents play an extremely important role in their child’s program. Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center provides parent training and support on a monthly basis to help families understand their child’s disabilities and education This program is for children ages 3 – 5 years that are eligible, through their school districts Committee on Preschool Speech Evaluation (CPSE).
