Stella Fey - Community Hero Award

Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, a not for profit United Way affiliated organization, is honored to nominate Stella Fey to the Community Hero Awards.

Stella is the volunteer every organization dreams of finding. One day Stella was reading a copy of Business First, she came across an article about Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center’s Golf Tournament.

She picked up the phone and called me and said, “I grew up with a deaf Mother, she did not have the option of a cochlear implant or any new technology. I want to help those who suffer with a hearing loss like my Mom did.” I knew from the dynamic and bubbly voice on the other end, we were about to find a “Steller Volunteer.”

Stella joined our golf committee and immediately took the lead role in day of logistics, and day of volunteers.   She needed no direction, she knew what to do.   She welcomed all golfers and spoke about Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center as if she had been an employee since its founding. After the golf outing, she missed us and asked to help out with other events.

She worked even harder on the Buffalo Brewfest; coordinating all of the volunteers and registration. With more than 5,000 attendees waiting to get into the event, Stella kept calm, took charge and ordered a single file line!    She made sure all the shifts are covered and did not leave the event until the last thing was finished.

In addition to working a full time job, Stella has joined The United Way Board Governance Project; so she can further her volunteer skills.

As a volunteer Stella is very attached to the mission of BHSC. Her drive to be a volunteer for us is only overshadowed by the heart that she brings as a Center volunteer. We call her “Stella the Steller Volunteer” and we know she is a true Hero in our Community. She eats, sleeps and breathes Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center! Her efforts have touched the lives of many, and her unselfish giving is an inspiration to all of us who work with her.
